Can a UV Laser Engrave Glass?

A 355 nm UV laser can frost glass and, with the right lens, engrave inside crystal. Surface marking and inner engraving are different jobs.

Yes. A 355 nm laser can frost the surface of glass and, on clear crystal, place marks inside the block. Those are different setups. On the xTool F2 Ultra UV, xTool lists a 200 × 200 mm surface field and a 70 × 70 mm field for inner engraving, with two switchable lenses (xTool).

Surface frost

Surface work looks like a pale etch. Clear glass has less contrast than slate, so a photo that looks bold on stone can disappear on a wine glass. Test a small patch on the same type of glass. Bottle walls are curved. A rotary is a separate setup, and focus has to follow the surface. Start with How to Focus a UV Laser Correctly.

Avoid tempered glass and unknown coatings. If you cannot say what the piece is, do not put it under the beam.

Inner engraving

Inner engraving breaks tiny points inside clear crystal or glass. The field is smaller. xTool's listing puts that area at 70 × 70 mm on the F2 Ultra UV. A gift cube fits. A large award may not.

The points only show if the block is clear and the model sits inside the volume. A flat logo file will not become a 3D portrait by itself. xTool Studio's 3D tools are part of that workflow. Read the current software notes before you promise a product photo you have not made.

What this is not

UV glass work is not a license to cut thick plate, and it is not the same as a diode score on painted tile. Acrylic is closer to a marking and light-cutting job than glass is. Metal is a mark, not a cut, at this power. Both show up in the desktop UV buying guide.

FAQ

Can I engrave a drinking glass?

You can frost many glasses. Curved pieces need a rotary or a very small flat patch. Test one glass from the batch. Do not assume a slate preset will transfer.

Why is my crystal engraving only on the surface?

The inner lens is not in the path, the model is a flat image, or the focus is on the face instead of inside the block.
